Assiniboine Memorial Curling Club started up in 1929. The building on Banting Street,
commonly refered to as the "Root Cellar" boasted two sheets of curling ice.
This was AMCC's home until December 1962 when the move was made to a new four sheet
facility at Vimy Road and Hamilton Ave., the present site. January 7, 1972, saw the club rooms
and part of the arena portion destroyed by fire. Most of the original building over the ice was
saved and an additional identical building was built alongside, increasing AMCC to an eight
sheet facility. Also included in the rebuilding was a new clubhouse facility, containing a
cafeteria, locker rooms and office on the main floor, and an upper level lounge. This is the
configuration that exists today.
The constant shifting of the "Winnipeg Gumbo" under the ice
area was addressed during the summer of 1992. The ice area was dug out to 6 feet below grade and
replaced with compacted sand to physically separate the ice from the gumbo, and topped with
layers of styrofoam insulation that thermally isolated the ice from effects below.
