(Increased Hours of Operation)
The Assiniboine Memorial Curling Club welcomes the new Restaurant Lessee - Vance Schussler.
The AMCC Board of Directors and management staff are delighted to announce the arrival of our new restaurant lessee. Vance comes to the Club with 25 years of experience in the food service industry and brings a great deal of enthusiasm, creativity and experience which will be a true asset to our Club.
In addition to having the restaurant open longer hours, Vance will be offering a wide variety of menu items to meet the requests of all his customers including the health conscious and the vegetarians. Please support Vance in the season(s) ahead.
Many thanks to Leslie/Kevin Nakonechny, Eric/Samantha Frederick, Dorothy Hollins, Jean Kunitski, Laura/Amanda/Jake McComb, Emily Munro, Charles Backman, Ray Sawchuk, Terry and Heather Brownlee for volunteering their time on Saturday, 21 June 2014 to work the gates at the Red River Ex thereby earning an Honorarium for the Club. Hopefully the fairly decent weather added to their Ex experience and the task was not too onerous. Also thanks to Sue Maxwell, George Archibald and Barry Mandryk for volunteering to assist if required and Lorne/Shirley Gregorash for advising the Board of this opportunity and assisting with the onsite coordination. Just another example of the impressive volunteer base at our great facility.
The recently announced closure of the Victoria Curling Club marks a sad day on the City and Provincial curling scene. The Vic has made many contributions to the roaring game throughout its very long time in operation and will be hard to replace. Victoria curlers, looking for a new home in the seasons ahead, are strongly encouraged to contact the Assiniboine Memorial Curling Club at www.curlamcc.ca or 204 479-7528 in that regard. Our 8 sheet, highly progressive facility has room for curlers of all ages, gender and skill levels.
The following Seniors helped with the Spring cleanup:
Charles Backman, Paul Batchelor, Terry Brownlee, George Bush, Charlie Buss, Len Cook, Fred Hunter, Merv Kuruluk, Brian Logan, Marcel Mollott, Al Seredynski, Don Timmerman and Bruce Wilkinson.
Thanks to all these guys for helping make a big job, into a manageable one.
The Assiniboine Memorial Curling Club, located in south west Winnipeg, is receiving proposals effective immediately for the lease of its kitchen facilities and all the equipment and furniture associated with the Restaurant. The lease is seasonal in nature operating from October 1st to April 30th of each year.
Any individual or business interested in entering into a Lease Agreement should contact or submit a proposal to: Bruce Burton
MLA Jim Rondeau took time out of his busy schedule the evening of Fri, 2 May 2014 to present a $20,000 cheque, from the Community Places Program, to Club Manager Paul Batchelor. This generous contribution, in direct support of the recently completed Accessibility Project, is just one of many Grants received from the Province over the past few years. MLA Rondeau spoke of the sense of genuine pride so prevalent at the AMCC as well as the health and welfare benefits accruing from the great sport of curling. Club Manager, Paul Batchelor, noted Jim's commendable concern for always placing the needs of his Constituents above all else. In true "energizer bunny" fashion Jim chatted with everyone in attendance at the annual Volunteer Appreciation Night, stopped for a wee bite to eat, brought greetings from the Province and dashed out of the club to his next engagement.
Congratulations to George Archibald; a very deserving recipient of the Curl Manitoba, AMCC Club Volunteer of the Year for 2013/14. Details of next season's Volunteer Appreciation Night will be announced at a later date.
Pictured - AMCC members Dennis Thiessen, Mark Wherrett, Jamie Anseeuw, Melisa Lecuyer, coach Tom Wherrett and piper Hilda Towerzey shortly after the team's arrival from Quebec where they captured the National Wheelchair Curling Championships. Although the team got off to a somewhat shaky start in round robin play they were able to regroup, winning tie breaker games and advancing to the Finals where they stole a win against the home Province favourites. The Para Olympic Gold medalist couldn't say enough about his team's dogged determination in emerging victorious over a very tough field. The Board of Directors and all members of the AMCC are extremely pleased with the outstanding efforts of these great athletes and look forward to seeing all of them next season in our fully accessible facility.

St. Charles School - after school curling program 2013-2014 Season
The Assiniboine Memorial Curling Club was very pleased to host the St. Charles after school curling program this past season. It was a joy to all the members seeing the young people coming into the Club and getting changed and ready to go on to the ice. At first they were wondering what hit the Club but it wasn’t long before they were looking forward to Wednesday afternoons with the “kids”.
The Club was most impressed with the supervision by Ms. Kim Anderson with the assistance of Ms. Newman as well as many parents and even grandparents. The Club volunteers, Leroy Clarke, Lou Girard, Muriel Hanson, Doug Rosler, Al Seredynski and Elsie Rosler enjoyed working with them all and were pleased to see how much they had advanced from the start of the season.
At Christmas and at the Windup, Ms. Anderson arranged competition games between the young teams and the coaches which proved to be exciting and great fun for all. This was followed by snack treats for everyone. A great finale to the season.
The Club hopes the School will continue the program in the fall and perhaps some of the young people will consider joining the Assiniboine Memorial Curling Club Little Rocks (ages 7-9) and Bantam (ages 10-12) curling program in the fall.
The afternoon of Sat, 22 Mar was a Golden moment in our Club's long history when Paralympian Gold medal Wheelchair curler, Dennis Thiessen, took time out of his busy schedule to display his medal, pose for some pictures, sign autographs and talk about his experiences in Sochi. In addition to many oohs and ahs, there were a number of comments regarding the weight of the medal and its appraised value. Unfortunately, relatively short notice resulted in a rather disappointing turn out. Dennis was nevertheless very appreciative of the reception and extremely humble in spite of his truly significant achievement. Past Presidents Bob McNaughton, Greg Daly and Doug Rosler added a purple hue to the Golden moment. Dennis was kind enough to pose for photos and sign autographs following his practice session on Sunday afternoon as well. The Board of Directors, members and staff are extremely proud of Dennis and pleased that he continues to refer to the AMCC as his Home Club.
Parents of the Bantam curlers were so impressed by this year's program that they provided a very appropriate, delicious cake for the enjoyment of all those in attendance at the windup function. Instructors Sonny Isaak, Theresa Bouchard and Nicole Wilkinson along with assistance from Board Members Loyd Olson and Horst Wuerfel ably assisted by Sasha Wiebe, Rick Vandenberghe, Trevor Gavinchuk, Jack Herny, Ian McCausland and Dave Rintoul are to be commended for their dedicated efforts in elevating the Youth Curling Program from near extinction to a vibrancy which has not been experienced at the AMCC for the past few years. Sincere thanks to the dedicated volunteers, youth curlers, parents and guardians for a super season which bodes well for the future of our great game.

For the second time in the past few years, the AMCC was chosen to host the Provincial Stick Curling Champions comprised of 40, 2 person teams of all ages, gender, abilities and disabilities. Following 3 days of very intense competition, socializing and genuine comradery the Ernie Oliver/Chris Sobkowicz team emerged as Provincial Champions and will be travelling to St Albert, Alberta to participate in the National Sticks Championship. Unique to Stick Curling, and in the interests of increasing participation levels, the Nationals is an open competition with the Manitoba Provincial Champions benefitting from some travel money compliments of the Manitoba Stick Curling Association. In addition to their excellence on the pebbled surface Chris and Ernie were the key organizers for this year's event and are instrumental in the continuing growth of this great activity. Of note, AMCC's very own Leroy Clarke and Bruce Leckie competed in the Consolation Event Final.
Once again the combined efforts of Matt and his hardworking ice crew, Kim and the family affair as well as Cindy and her friendly bar staff firmly established the AMCC as the perfect venue for hosting curling events of all sizes and requirements.
A MOST UPLIFTING EXPERIENCE
Paralympian and AMCC member Dennis Thiessen arrives at the second floor following a smooth ride on the recently commissioned public lift. Dennis, and fellow wheelchair curlers Mark and Jamie, thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to socialize with other club members in the upper lounge stating how pleased they are that their Club is leading the way in providing full access to persons with disabilities and mobility issues. Dennis and the Team Canada Paralympians will be departing for Sochi in late February. A Send Off Social, recognizing Dennis' outstanding achievement, will be held in the Club rooms at 7PM, Fri, 21 Feb 2014. Tickets can be purchased at the Bar.
