Congratulations to Donovan Locken, Burke Nagle, Kevin Rawluk and Will Sutton for very recently capturing the 2013/14 Men's Club Championship. This achievement will be acknowledged at the 10 May 2014 Men's League Windup. In addition Donovan, Burke, Kevin and Will have earned the honour of representing the AMCC at the 2015 Dominion Winnipeg Regional Playoffs.
Barry Mandryk and his team commence play this evening in the 2014 Dominion Provincial Championships in East St Paul. Barry and the guys would relish an opportunity to make a return trip to the Dominion Nationals next Fall. Results can be found on the Curl MB website.
Pictured George Archibald, Paul Batchelor, Sue Maxwell and Dorothy Hollins along with their first pick from the very impressive prize tables on display at the AMCC's 2nd annual funspiel. Paul, George, Sue and Dorothy are looking forward to a round of golf at Pine Ridge Golf Course and an opportunity to reflect on their on ice accomplishments in winning this very valuable prize. Thanks in large part to the hard work and organizational skills of Loyd Olson this year's spiel was an overwhelming success and bodes well for the future. It was great to see many family and friend teams, curlers of all skill levels and numerous new faces to the club. Also a vote of thanks to Lorne, Shirley Gregorash and George Archibald for conducting very successful 50/50's throughout the spiel. The introduction of Kim Bucks ensured the provision of food service while participants curled on great ice and enjoyed socializing in the upper lounge. Stay tuned for details of next seasons AMCC funspiel.
St. Charles School - after school curling program 2013-2014 Season
The Assiniboine Memorial Curling Club was very pleased to host the St. Charles after school curling program this past season. It was a joy to all the members seeing the young people coming into the Club and getting changed and ready to go on to the ice. At first they were wondering what hit the Club but it wasn’t long before they were looking forward to Wednesday afternoons with the “kids”.
The Club was most impressed with the supervision by Ms. Kim Anderson with the assistance of Ms. Newman as well as many parents and even grandparents. The Club volunteers, Leroy Clarke, Lou Girard, Muriel Hanson, Doug Rosler, Al Seredynski and Elsie Rosler enjoyed working with them all and were pleased to see how much they had advanced from the start of the season.
At Christmas and at the Windup, Ms. Anderson arranged competition games between the young teams and the coaches which proved to be exciting and great fun for all. This was followed by snack treats for everyone. A great finale to the season.
The Club hopes the School will continue the program in the fall and perhaps some of the young people will consider joining the Assiniboine Memorial Curling Club Little Rocks (ages 7-9) and Bantam (ages 10-12) curling program in the fall.
The afternoon of Sat, 22 Mar was a Golden moment in our Club's long history when Paralympian Gold medal Wheelchair curler, Dennis Thiessen, took time out of his busy schedule to display his medal, pose for some pictures, sign autographs and talk about his experiences in Sochi. In addition to many oohs and ahs, there were a number of comments regarding the weight of the medal and its appraised value. Unfortunately, relatively short notice resulted in a rather disappointing turn out. Dennis was nevertheless very appreciative of the reception and extremely humble in spite of his truly significant achievement. Past Presidents Bob McNaughton, Greg Daly and Doug Rosler added a purple hue to the Golden moment. Dennis was kind enough to pose for photos and sign autographs following his practice session on Sunday afternoon as well. The Board of Directors, members and staff are extremely proud of Dennis and pleased that he continues to refer to the AMCC as his Home Club.
Parents of the Bantam curlers were so impressed by this year's program that they provided a very appropriate, delicious cake for the enjoyment of all those in attendance at the windup function. Instructors Sonny Isaak, Theresa Bouchard and Nicole Wilkinson along with assistance from Board Members Loyd Olson and Horst Wuerfel ably assisted by Sasha Wiebe, Rick Vandenberghe, Trevor Gavinchuk, Jack Herny, Ian McCausland and Dave Rintoul are to be commended for their dedicated efforts in elevating the Youth Curling Program from near extinction to a vibrancy which has not been experienced at the AMCC for the past few years. Sincere thanks to the dedicated volunteers, youth curlers, parents and guardians for a super season which bodes well for the future of our great game.

For the second time in the past few years, the AMCC was chosen to host the Provincial Stick Curling Champions comprised of 40, 2 person teams of all ages, gender, abilities and disabilities. Following 3 days of very intense competition, socializing and genuine comradery the Ernie Oliver/Chris Sobkowicz team emerged as Provincial Champions and will be travelling to St Albert, Alberta to participate in the National Sticks Championship. Unique to Stick Curling, and in the interests of increasing participation levels, the Nationals is an open competition with the Manitoba Provincial Champions benefitting from some travel money compliments of the Manitoba Stick Curling Association. In addition to their excellence on the pebbled surface Chris and Ernie were the key organizers for this year's event and are instrumental in the continuing growth of this great activity. Of note, AMCC's very own Leroy Clarke and Bruce Leckie competed in the Consolation Event Final.
Once again the combined efforts of Matt and his hardworking ice crew, Kim and the family affair as well as Cindy and her friendly bar staff firmly established the AMCC as the perfect venue for hosting curling events of all sizes and requirements.
A MOST UPLIFTING EXPERIENCE
Paralympian and AMCC member Dennis Thiessen arrives at the second floor following a smooth ride on the recently commissioned public lift. Dennis, and fellow wheelchair curlers Mark and Jamie, thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to socialize with other club members in the upper lounge stating how pleased they are that their Club is leading the way in providing full access to persons with disabilities and mobility issues. Dennis and the Team Canada Paralympians will be departing for Sochi in late February. A Send Off Social, recognizing Dennis' outstanding achievement, will be held in the Club rooms at 7PM, Fri, 21 Feb 2014. Tickets can be purchased at the Bar.

The first half of the curling season wrapped up on a very busy note the weekend of 20-22 Dec when the AMCC hosted the Manitoba Men's and Women's U18 competition along with the Mixed Doubles Trials. Following 3 days of very good competition, scheduled so as not to conflict with regular club curling, the Kurz/Fallis team earned the right to compete in the National Mixed Doubles (Ottawa) while our very own JT Ryan and Christine Mackay teams qualified for the Manitoba Winter Games (Winkler/Morden).
JT, Hugh McFarlane, Brad Van Achte, Gordon McFarlane and coach John Lund will be very busy as they had already earned a berth in the Junior Provincials taking place in Portage La Prairie at the end of December. Joining the guys in Portage will be the Rachel Burtnyk team as they compete in their second straight Provincial Junior Championships as well as the Grenkow team also representing the AMCC. The future of our great facility is in good hands thanks in large part to the great curling, sportsmanship and potential displayed by these very well coached athletes.
The AMCC will be very well represented at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts being held in Virden 8-12 Jan 2014. Previous Provincial Champions Barb Spencer and Janet Harvey will be skipping squads which have competed very well to this point in the season. In addition Michelle Montford will be returning with a team which performed very well at last year's Championship.
The Host Committee is pleased to note that our very own Wayne Johnson team has earned the right to compete in the Provincial Masters Championships at the AMCC 27 Feb - 03 Mar 2014. Further details will be provided with a reminder that the event still requires a fair number of volunteers.
Continuously updated results for all Provincial Championships can be found on the Curl Manitoba website; along with information regarding the impending deadline for the Manitoba Open (aka MCA) spiel, Club benefits related to the purchase of Speciality Licence plates and weekly admission pass to the Safeway Championship.
Looking forward to a busy, rewarding second half of the 2013/14 curling season featuring the completion of the accessibility project.
